Silence

The revealing and disgusting news about the wanton waste of money by the elected officials of Ireland reminds me of a poem called "Silence". When nobody shouts stop, this is what happens.

SILENCE

A bolt of lightening streaks
Across the midnight sky
Crashing thunder volleys
Induce a child’s plaintive cry
Maternal hand will gently calm
She knows the greatest fear
Is not the transparent entity
You can see and hear

Far greater be the threat
That postures as benign silence
Suffocating the fragile truth
That balances on the fence
When will you be able to tell me
What separates right from wrong?
And why is it that silence
Is always louder than the song

Goodness can only dream
And always be a silken ghost
Floating at the very periphery
Of the party that silence hosts
For evil will gladly propagate
And honour will quietly acquiesce
When silence dons its cloak
And timid men won’t confess

Silence is at its loudest pitch
When the humble are meek
And stillness is overwhelming
When the truth they seek
Foster not upon ourselves
Notions of pedantic ambivalence
For nothing crushes good so much
As the approval that is silence
